January 4 is a day for all of us who snub our noses at the pop charts, scorning everything from Brittany Spears to Nickelback and claiming that anything that makes a #1 since 1995 is a piece of crap, to bite our tongues and enjoy the guilty pleasure tunes that we normally disdain. Look, we’ve all got that hidden CD, that folder of songs on our desktop or iPod that we wouldn’t even show our own mothers; why not stop judging one another (as well as ourselves) and allow ourselves to enjoy our Vanilla Ice, M.C. Hammer, New Kids on the Block, Milli Vanilli, Leo Sayer, and whoever else you’d never be caught dead jamming out to—at least for the day?

While the subsequent versions were pretty unfulfilling, I still get goosebumps when I think about the first Free Willy movie. I was only about ten or so when I watched it, but I remember—even though the cover of the film pretty much gave the ending away—being inspired and amazed by the story of the orphan who freed the whale. (Of course, the whale who played Willy, Keiko, later needed freeing of its own, and was eventually released into the wild as well.) Read more
