While the subsequent versions were pretty unfulfilling, I still get goosebumps when I think about the first Free Willy movie. I was only about ten or so when I watched it, but I remember—even though the cover of the film pretty much gave the ending away—being inspired and amazed by the story of the orphan who freed the whale. (Of course, the whale who played Willy, Keiko, later needed freeing of its own, and was eventually released into the wild as well.)
Michael Jackson’s iconic song, “Will You Be There?” was also a source of wonderment at the time. The movie’s theme song, also on Jackson’s Dangerous album, won the MTV Movie Award of “Best Song in a Movie” for the year, and rightly so. Part symphony, part orchestra and part amazing lyrics, it’s probably one of the best film songs ever. With lyrics like, “Carry me, like you are my brother, love me like a mother, would you be there?” it rings of goose bump-worthy hits like U2’s “One” or “Pride (In the Name of Love).”
The song is now being remade by a cast of big names to benefit charity. Celebrities rumored to be participating include Usher, John Mayer, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, Wyclef jean, Jermaine Jackson, Dionne Warwick, and Jennifer Hudson.
Proceeds from the remix will be benefitting the Larry King Cardiac Foundation as well as one of Jackson’s favorite personal charities.
